basically you use letters like x or y to represent numbers you haven't found yet. your whole job is to figure out what those letters are worth. that's it, literally.
a variable is basically a mystery box — it's just holding a number we don't know yet. we call it something like x so we have a name for it. click the box if you want to see what's inside!
